High-risk pregnancy
In high-risk pregnancies, close monitoring is essential to reduce the likelihood of premature delivery and improve the chances of a healthy foal.
Factors that may classify a mare as high risk, or make her more likely to require assistance at foaling, include maternal illness, advanced age, previous pregnancy complications and placentitis.
Placentitis – an infection or inflammation of the placenta – is a recognised cause of premature delivery and abortion in mares. Early detection and treatment can significantly improve the chances of maintaining the pregnancy and reduce the risk of restricted foetal growth.
Mares with a history of placentitis, abortion or premature delivery may therefore be monitored from approximately 150 days of gestation, often through monthly ultrasound examinations. The precise monitoring programme will be tailored to the individual mare and her pregnancy.
