Aftercare Advice: Sacro-iliac Joint Injection

Starling Equine Vets Aftercare Advice

Your horse has had medication injected into their sacroiliac joints today. Please follow the advice below to support their recovery.

Injection Site Care

  • There is no dressing over the injection sites

  • Please use a clean stable sheet for the next 48 hours to help keep the area clean

Rest and Turnout

  • First 24 hours: box rest

  • Following 4 days: Turnout into the field as much as possible

Exercise and Work (first 2 weeks)

  • All work should be in hand only

  • Long-lining is ideal

  • Focus on gentle stretching, encouraging your horse to stretch downwards and stay relaxed

  • This is best done at walk

  • If using poles:

    • Keep exercise simple

    • No raised poles for the first 2 weeks

We are happy to:

  • Show you suitable exercises

  • Offer a rehabilitation programme

  • Direct you to helpful videos on our social media pages

Physiotherapy

We recommend your horse sees a physiotherapist 2 weeks after the injection.
