Aftercare Advice: Post-hock Injection

Starling Equine Vets Aftercare Advice

We have medicated your horse’s hock joints today. Follow the guidance below to support their recovery.

Bandages

  • Your horse is currently wearing bandages to protect the injection sites

  • These should stay on for 4–6 hours

  • Remove sooner if they slip or become loose

Rest & Exercise Plan

First 48 hours

  • Your horse should remain on box rest

Following 5 days

  • After box rest, allow 5 days of quiet work or turnout

  • Ideal options include:

    • Gentle walking hacks

    • In‑hand walking

  • If your horse is not currently in work, paddock rest is more appropriate

From day 7 post‑medication

  • Your horse’s workload can gradually increase

  • Please speak to us about suitable:

    • Exercises

    • Stretching routines

  • We also have helpful pole‑work videos available on request

Possible Complications

Please monitor your horse closely for any of the following:

  • Depression

  • Fever

  • Worsening lameness

  • Reluctance to move

If you notice any of these signs, please contact the office immediately on 01473 970393.

Additional Considerations

  • Joint pain is common and can affect other areas of the horse’s body

  • We recommend informing your farrier that your horse has had hock pain

    • (We may already have suggested changes to shoeing)

Because your horse may have been moving differently:

  • A physiotherapist visit is recommended 2–4 weeks after medication

  • An osteopath visit is recommended around 4 weeks after medication

  • Saddle fit may also change, so a saddle check within 8 weeks is advisable
