Can you breed the perfect horse? Join us for a Starling Equine Vets client evening
What makes the perfect horse – and does “perfect” mean something different to every rider?
A dressage prospect, a racehorse, a showjumper and a dependable amateur sports horse all need different qualities. So, when it comes to breeding and selecting horses, what should we be looking for?
Join Starling Equine Vets on Wednesday 25th October 2026 at Victory Hall, Hasketon, starting at 7pm, for an informative client evening exploring this fascinating question.
Different horses, different priorities
Our evening, “Can you breed the perfect horse?”, will bring together a panel of equine experts to discuss the qualities we look for in horses across different disciplines and levels.
From dressage and showjumping to racing and amateur sport, we’ll explore how priorities vary according to a horse’s intended job. What matters most when assessing a potential athlete? How do temperament, conformation and ability influence our choices? And what makes a horse the right fit for an amateur rider?
With a range of perspectives around the table, the panel discussion will offer an opportunity to hear how different equine professionals approach these questions.
A closer look at stud work and equine reproduction
Thinking about breeding from your mare, or keen to understand more about the process?
We’ll be joined by Bruce from Thorpeley Irish Draught and Susie, our specialist reproductive vet, to explore the breeding journey. Combining practical stud experience with veterinary expertise, they’ll discuss the decisions, examinations and care involved before and after breeding.
Topics will include:
Pre-breeding examinations: assessing your mare before breeding and identifying considerations that may affect the next steps.
Monitoring cycles: understanding your mare’s reproductive cycle and how monitoring helps with breeding timing.
Barren mare examinations: assessing mares that have not conceived and exploring possible reasons.
Fertility examinations and investigations: looking more closely at reproductive health when further assessment is needed.
Artificial insemination and semen choice: explaining the process, the differences between fresh, chilled and frozen semen, and how to choose the most suitable option for your mare and circumstances.
Post-breeding examinations and possible treatments: discussing follow-up checks and when additional veterinary care may be appropriate.
Pregnancy diagnosis and twin management: exploring pregnancy checks and the importance of identifying and managing twin pregnancies.
Breeding packages available: explaining the options offered by Starling Equine Vets and what they include.
Whether you’re planning your first foal, have an experienced broodmare or want to learn more before making a decision, this part of the evening will provide insight into both stud management and reproductive veterinary care.
An evening of shared knowledge
We’re looking forward to bringing clients and equine experts together for a welcoming evening of collaboration, discussion and information sharing.
Refreshments will be provided, and it promises to be a fascinating night for anyone interested in what makes a horse suited to its role – and how breeding can help shape that potential.
