The CMA Report on UK Veterinary Practices – what is it and what does it mean?

The Competition and Market’s Authority (CMA) recently conducted an inquiry into veterinary practices across the UK – highlighting issues with major veterinary groups and an increase in acquisitions of independent veterinary practices into these groups and how this has impacted fair competition across the UK and the impact this is having on patients and their owners.

Whilst this is not directed at Equine Veterinary Practices, and is focused primarily on household pet veterinary practices, we have been really pleased to see that most of the recommendations that came from the report we already choose to do as we genuinely believe in transparent, fair and ethical practice.

The below are ways that we ensure our equine veterinary services are accessible for all:

  • We have published pricing on our website

  • We will always provide you with a detailed, itemised bill at the time of your visit, even if you are planning on claiming through insurance. It’s important for you to know how much you have spent and what on so there are no surprises.

  • We will be able to provide estimates ahead of your exam and will inform you of changing costs

  • We will always discuss your options for euthanasia and collection, and will outline the costs of all options ahead of time. We have a document available outlining your options as well if it’s easier to read.

  • We will always offer you a prescription for your drugs if you prefer to source yourself

As with any service industry, especially when caring for beloved animals, raising awareness of fair practice is always positive, and we pride ourselves as an independent practice on our open and ethical code of practice and will provide as much information as we possibly can for our customers to ensure they feel informed and in control at all times.

If you have any questions surrounding the report and what it means, please get in touch with our team.
